SAM:  White, 25 - 30, passionate, scruffy, intelligent

MR. PEREZ:  second generation Latino, 40 – 50. Heartless, funny

RUBEN:  Mexican, 25 - 30, softspoken and intelligent

BERT:  White, 45 - 50, Rosa’s good-natured husband

SIMONA:  16 years old, Rosa’s daughter

LUIS:  11 years old, Bert and Rosa’s son

ELLA:  African American, 35 - 40, confident and clever

DOLORES:  African American, 30 - 35, soft-spoken and timid

MARINA:  Russian, 40 - 45, hard and unsentimental - she’s seen it all 

JUAN:  Mexican, 20 - 25, hip and smartmouthed

BERTA:  El Salvadorian, 60 - 65, frail with failing eyesight

ANNA:  El Salvadorian, 50, stronger than Berta but still intimidated by Mr. Perez

OSCAR:  Guatemalan, 30, gentle and softspoken
